Mogwai - 'Music Industry 3. Fitness Industry 1'

6/10

'Music Industry 3. Fitness Industry 1' is Mogwai's unusually titled accompaniment EP to their latest album 'Rave Tapes'. Recorded during the sessions for their most recent full-length, the EP hosts three unreleased tracks as well as three remixes from Blanck Mass, Pye Corner Audio and Nils Frahm, giving the material a different feel throughout and coming across as a small selection of loose ends that pad out the work released on the new record.

As a whole, it is a good little cross-section of material that manages to sum up Mogwai's sound in just a few productions. Opening with 'Teenage Exorcists', the EP's only non-instrumental track, you get a sense that these weren't left off for their lack of quality but just their inability to fit within the work on 'Rave Tapes'. But when the remixes begin, that's where the real excitement kicks in as Blanck Mass deliver a dark and brooding techno rework of 'Re-Remurdered' before Pye Corner Audio and Nils Frahm show off their unique takes on the tracks 'No Medicine For Regrets' and 'The Lord Is Out Of Control' that brings the EP to a nice and simple close.

Most definitely one for serious Mogwai fans but still a great release nonetheless. It never feels like a b-side release on any of the tracks, even if it does waiver in places.
