Mooses - 'Mooses'

7/10

Over these last few years, Detroit-based outfit Mooses have been busy crafting a distinctive direction in which to call their own. Dabbling in this heady mix of psych-rock eccentricities, that sometimes broaden into more abstract and experimental avenues, their sound to date has been this wildly adventurous one, always looking to add a new and distinctive edge to their ever-expanding repertoire. And after another flurry of much-loved outings over recent months, they are now back to deliver their long-awaited self-titled debut album, a record that looks to go bigger and more expansive than ever before.

Much like what their enigmatic endeavours have explored up until now, 'Mooses' makes for this brilliantly innovative listen that sees them spread their creative wings further than ever before. Adopting this raw and grizzled production to give these gritty tracks an incredibly rich texture throughout, this fourteen-track collection finds them in one of their more unpredictable guises to date. Switching up the tempo and flow of each song as often as possible, Mooses continue to establish themselves as one of the more original names doing the rounds with this one.

While it has certainly been a great time for self-discovery within their sound lately, 'Mooses' shows there is still plenty of inventive spirit coursing through them right now. Moving with this tangible yet bombastic flair at every turn, they remain a firm and consistent addition to today's new music scene.
