Mura Masa - 'Curve 1'

7/10

Ever since he first broke through with his fantastic self-titled debut LP in 2017, Mura Masa has established himself as one of the more interesting and innovative names on the electronic scene. Known for his shapeshifting abilities and adventurous approach to production, the years since have delivered this brilliantly enigmatic pursuit of ideas, all adding to his progressive nature of late. And after finding renewed praise for his 2022 release 'demon time', he is now back once again with his fourth studio album 'Curve 1', a record that sees him explore a higher and more intense energy.

Throughout his career, Mura Masa has always been this unpredictable character who always seeks for something new and original with every new project, and 'Curve 1' is no different. Opening up with 'Whenever I Want' and 'gimme', the record instantly sets itself up as a more club-friendly outing, one that sees him venture towards big beats and infectious grooves throughout. It may be a strong departure from his more familiar work, but still manages to flood itself with plenty of lively and enjoyable moments throughout.

It was clear from the start that this was Mura Masa breaking the shackles of his conventions once again, but 'Curve 1' is still just as proficient and immersive as any of his previous material. Keeping the energy fresh and anthemic as often as possible, he returns in strong and confident form once again.
