The Mysterines - 'Afraid Of Tomorrows'

7/10

When The Mysterines released their breakthrough debut LP 'Reeling' in 2022, it was greeted as one of the more refreshing releases from that year. Brimming with this dark yet enjoyable pursuit of atmospheric guitar anthems, the Liverpool four-piece quickly found themselves as one of the more in-demand names on the scene, spending much of the years since heading out onto the road for a string of notable live shows. Now looking to do it all again, they are back with their hotly-tipped sophomore studio album 'Afraid Of Tomorrows', a record that continues that innovative direction once again.

Much like what their initial offering had in store for us, 'Afraid Of Tomorrows' explores more of that rich and alluring alt-rock energy they have become synonymous for. With comparable influences to the likes of Garbage and Pixies with its brooding nature from time to time, this new outing marks another deep dive into their most captivating aesthetics so far, unearthing some truly broad and immersive ideas as it plays.

It may not have the same initial impact as its predecessor, but 'Afraid Of Tomorrows' still keeps its head firmly above water. Returning to the raw and driven explorations they have always nurtured, The Mysterines continue to soar as a shining light on the UK music scene right now.
