Neneh Cherry - 'Broken Politics'

6/10

Despite a career that has lasted almost 30 years, Neneh Cherry has kept herself quiet for long periods of her time in the limelight, musically at least. With this only her fifth solo full-length in the last three decades, the frontwoman has found herself reenergised in the last few years, releasing the well-received 'Blank Project' back in 2014, and now the latest addition to her enigmatic back-catalogue 'Broken Politics', a record that sees her take focus on the current state of the world.

Produced by the ever-brilliant Four Tet, 'Broken Politics' is of course a retort to this modern era of division we have found ourselves in. Trump and Brexit may have contributed a lot of angst and uncertainty in the newer artists of today, but for a seasoned pro like Cherry, she seems to speak about these times from a area of experience. Keeping very much to the lo-fi trip-hop-inspired sound that she was first known for, this new full-length flips between a poetic and swooning collection of ideas and one that is more about reflecting society, letting out her deep frustrations in a measured and comforted way.

It may not have that instant grab factor that she has been known for before, but 'Broken Politics' has certainly given her enough inspiration to continue this sudden resurrection she has been going through recently. A confident return but one that occasionally misses the mark when it comes to creating an instantly engaging release.
