Nicolas Jaar - 'Sirens'

6/10

While producer Nicolas Jaar has proven himself extremely prolific over the last few years, 'Sirens' is the first studio album we have seen from him since his 2011 work 'Space Is Only Noise'. Since then he has been filling his time with the occasional single and his brilliant 'Pomegranates' soundtrack, and while his return has been a long time coming, this new material seems to show Jaar on an even more laid-back trip than usual.

Almost entirely percussionless in its production, the album aims to create a spiritual netherspace where electronics and voices are all that exist. The record seems to conjure up images of a vast nothingness that is both peaceful and daunting in equal measure. Jaar's use of spaced-out instrumentation leaves you with this sense emptiness within the music, which proves itself to be as enticing as it is unusual.

It is fair to say that not everyone will enjoy this new album, and I'm not entirely sure whether I did either. Even those who love Jaar's work to date may find this a little hard to stomach, but it is so hard to find flaw with his music and the way it is able to move you.
