Oh Wonder - '22 Make'

6/10

While the pandemic was a tough experience for many of those locked inside with their loved ones, for Oh Wonder, that hardship was almost played out for those following their work. During that period, the pair almost called off their relationship, leading to the release of their much-loved LP '22 Break' last year. But instead of completely calling it quits, they managed to rekindle their forgotten spirit and actually get married. This led them to produce something at odds with their previous outing, and so return with their fifth studio album '22 Make', a record that reflects their newfound love.

Although the creation of '22 Break' was clearly an emotionally-charged ride given the very raw and real feelings those at the helm were feeling, '22 Make' comes across as a far more subdued listen. Almost the sonic equivalent of a sigh of relief, their newest collection aims to find a path back to their formative selves, and leave this part of their journey behind them. The result is a wonderfully sweet and alluring listen that keeps the cliched mushiness to a minimum, and embarks on a warm and sweeping journey to the heart of their intimate and personal relationship.

It may not have the same intense vigour and stakes of their previous offering, but '22 Make' still makes for a brilliantly alluring listen. Rarely pulling themselves out of their light and ethereal aesthetic, this new release feels like the cap upon this moment in their lives, and hopefully the beginning of something much bigger.
