Pale Waves - 'Smitten'

7/10

Over these last few years, Manchester's Pale Waves have managed to establish themselves as one of the more impactful pop bands doing the rounds. While very much honed into a commercially-angled aesthetic, their raw and anthemic approach to production has allowed them to stand out amongst their contemporary, harnessing a legacy that has always maintained a fresh and immersive edge. And after continuing that reputation on 2022's 'Unwanted', they are back once again with their fourth studio album 'Smitten', a record that feels brighter and more euphoric than ever before.

While these last few releases have seen them toil back and forth with bright and glossy pop records with something more earthy and gritty, 'Smitten' sees them lean heavily into the former while dropping the pretence surrounding their more intimate moments. The result is this wildly enjoyable release that feels fresher and more exciting than usual. With one rich and euphoric belter after another, Pale Waves have certainly reached their stride with this one.

It has certainly been a prolific time for them in recent years, but 'Smitten' feels like the balance within their direction has finally been found. Confident and assured from start to finish, Pale Waves sound so much more connected to their art than ever before.
