Raf Rundell - 'The Adventures Of Selfie Boy Pt.1'

7/10

While best known as one half of production duo The 2 Bears, alongside Hot Chip's Joe Goddard, producer Raf Rundell has now ventured of on his own path to deliver his first solo full-length 'The Adventures Of Selfie Boy Pt.1'. And while The 2 Bears are best known for their infectious dancefloor stompers, this new solo project sees Rundell spread his creative wings to deliver an album with a more laid-back vibe.

Its opener 'Carried Away' may have this high-tempo energy throughout, but doesn't really portray the album it is introducing. The rest of the album seems to be this mix of nu-disco and hip-hop production influences, all designed to create an enjoyable and soothing atmosphere. As Raf croons his way through every track on this album, you get the sense that he is taking you on a journey of musical experimentation with every single. This record seems to act as a template of ideas that the producer has been working on, all with their own quirks and eccentricities.

While fans of The 2 Bears will certainly appreciate this, 'The Adventures Of Selfie Boy Pt.1' isn't really much of a dancefloor record. It's more of a kick-you-shoes-off-after-a-long-day kind of release, something that you can wrap up warm in and enjoy horizontally.
