Rosetta West - 'Labyrinth'

7/10

Ever since they first emerged, Chicago's Rosetta West have always looked to project a more diverse appeal than many others in their field. While largely akin to a psychedelic and/or blues-rock direction for their ascent to date, their sprawling array of releases have continued to cement them as one of the more eclectic names on the US underground scene. And with more praise and acclaim still building for them, they return with their passionate new studio album 'Labyrinth', a record that looks to build upon that dynamic approach so far.

Having been together since the 1990s, Rosetta West's sound has always looked to move with the times, and this is exactly what we get on 'Labyrinth'. Blending some distinctively traditional elements in their production with a more forward-thinking take on their songwriting, this new collection ebbs and flows with wondrous ease. Venturing more towards a desert-rock aesthetic on a number of these new offerings, they continue their pursuit as one of the more progressive and immersive names doing the rounds right now.

While a prolific output can sometimes wear a band down, Rosetta West find themselves very much at their creative peak here. Dabbling in an even more varied style this time around, 'Labyrinth' should end up going down as one of their more adventurous release of their sprawling career to date.
