ScHoolboy Q - 'Blank Face'

6/10

After the release of his 2014 studio album 'Oxymoron', the profile of ScHoolboy Q went supernova. The previously underground MC tapped into an aggression that later ended with Kendrick Lamar giving an audience to modern political hip-hop, and now looks to continue that attitude with his fourth full-length 'Blank Face'.

While it doesn't feature as many memorable tracks as his last release, the album still manages to create a succinct sound (even though that is mainly the dating trap genre) and the addition of notable artists such as Kanye West, Miguel and Anderson Paak certainly give it more of an identifiable edge. While it may not have much to say this time around, as far as pushing the boundaries of hip-hop in 2016 go, ScHoolboy Q still seems to have the edge in that field.

Fans of his last album may be a little disappointed in its lack of biting social commentary, but the record still manages to give us a contemporary snapshot at what hip-hop is doing outside of the mainstream names.
