Stornoway - 'Bonxie'

7/10

Having found themselves riding the peripheries of the British music scene for the last five years, Oxford-based alternative-folk outfit Stornoway return with their third full-length release. Created from a crowdfunding campaign, the band managed to meet their financial target in just four days, so although their fanbase may be modest in size, they are most certainly devoted and it is clear to see why.

Taking the lyrical lilt of classical folk music, and combining it with modern songwriting and occasional electronic addition, the Stornoway sound is most certainly a unique one. But what 'Bonxie' has over their previous releases is a playful and sometimes experimental approach that leaves the record feeling less restrained than their work prior. The crowdfunding element has given them the confidence to produce an album with no need for commercial convention and the result is a enjoyable and bouncing release that their fans will be more than pleased with.

While it still may not make them the household name they deserve to be, it is certainly promising to see a band still maintaining a consummate level of quality three albums in. Brimming with new and exciting ideas, 'Bonxie' is a record made by the fans, for the fans.
