Stranger Things: Season One OST Vol 1

8/10

If there is one TV show that people have been talking non-stop about this year, it is the hit Netflix original series Stranger Things. The Stephen King influenced 8-part series set in 1983 about paranormal activity in a small US town has been filled with nostalgic cult references, not to mention an era-appropriate soundtrack to boot. And while most will be able to recount the use of The Clash and David Bowie from the series, this soundtrack serves as half of the score to the series.

Composed by Texan electro outfit Survive, this hefty 36-track release is in fact only half of the music used during the show. Using little more than a collection of synthesisers, the soundtrack makes for an ominous yet spine-chilling listen. Even if you haven't seen the show, there is no denying that this score has managed to perfectly recreate the huge electronic influence music had during the 80s, all while managing to affect emotion as it plays.

While being only a score, it is missing the visual aspect that would truly bring it to life. But even hearing it on its own, you feel like you have been transported back 30 years when Moog synthesisers were all a producer needed to create stunning contemporary music. Beautifully constructed and inspired throughout.
