Supershy - 'Happy Music'

6/10

There is no denying the impact Tom Misch has had on the new music scene in such a short space of time. His 2018 debut album 'Geography' was an instant smash hit, featuring countless singles that cemented him as an exciting prospect for the years ahead. Then working with Yussef Dayes on the collaborative LP 'What Kinda Music' in 2020 brought an even more diverse direction to his already adventurous persona. But now it seems he is trying something completely different as he adopts the Supershy moniker for his new mixtape 'Happy Music', a record that sees him delve into the club space throughout.

While this new venture has been his sole focus these last few months, it feels like Supershy has grown into something bigger than just a new experiment for him to try out. Honing a disco-inspired aesthetic that has already proven popular for the likes of Caribou, Four Tet, Purple Disco Machine and many more in recent years, 'Happy Music' is a solid attempt to bring more of those euphoric tones to the mainstream. While it doesn't have the same creative vigour he or his contemporaries have unloaded previously, it still makes for a wildly fun and enjoyable romp.

Tom Misch is clearly an individual with too many ideas for just one person, and so Supershy makes for the perfect outlet for some of those more left-of-centre ambitions of his. It is not groundbreaking or trying to pursue anything new, but 'Happy Music' is a wonderfully fresh and upbeat dose of disco fun that most will find hard to ignore in places.
