Toro Y Moi - 'Boo Boo'

6/10

Over the years, frontman Chaz Bundick (now known as Chaz Bear) has been a solid force in the evolution of contemporary music. Whether it is through his electronic outfit Les Sins or his more well-known pseudonym Toro Y Moi, Chaz has always looked to create an engaging listening experience, which peaked in 2015 with his most commercially successful full-length 'What For?'. Now returning with album number five, the songwriter-producer has taken on a more artificial direction than we would have expected.

Opting mostly for a synth-led production this time around, 'Boo Boo' certainly seems like the beginning of a musical adventure as far as he is concerned. Rather than settle on the tried-and-tested sound of his last release, Chaz is now looking within his own personal style and trying to deliver something that has the familiarity of his older material, but arranged it through a lens of electronics that try their best to compliment his organic sound.

Overall, 'Boo Boo' is real love it or leave it release. If you aren't quite taken by the first few tracks, then there isn't much else that is going to change your mind later on. As much as we can admire the producer for taking a brave new step, it usually has trouble finding its feet, and while there are still the odd stand-out single here and there, the full product falls flat too often.
