Twin Shadow - 'Caer'

6/10

Since releasing his brilliant third album 'Eclipse' back in 2015, frontman George Lewis Jr aka Twin Shadow seems to have been having a pretty hard time of it between then and now. Naming his album 'Caer', the Spanish word for falling, he takes the both the colloquial and literal meaning of the word to create a release that conjures up ideas of both falling into and out of love, as well as the literally fall from grace he has felt in his own emotional space.

But unlike most of his records to date, we are seeing a far more exposed Twin Shadow on this album. The production has been stripped back to unveil the frontman as an almost barebones presentation of himself, pouring his feelings on record as best he can. Yet despite his more honest and vulnerable sound, it does have some trouble keeping itself enticing as it plays , finding itself faltering in places and finishing on a very low note.

This may not have the same power as his previous material but given how much of the release's content seems themed around love and loss, it seems clear that this is a very important and personal collection of tracks. An emotional roller coaster at times but just struggles to rekindle that fire we know is in him.
