Viruette - 'Waylaid In Aspic'

8/10

When Boston-based trio Viruette introduced themselves with their breakthrough self-titled debut single last year, they immediately cemented themselves as one of the more dynamic names emerging on the indie-rock scene. With a warm and heartfelt approach to their sound that always paid close attention to driven grooves and anthemic hooks, they have quickly established a distinctive sound for themselves in the months since. And with the buzz still rising, they return with their eagerly-awaited debut EP 'Waylaid In Aspic', a release brimming with fresh and innovative ideas.

Much like what we have come to expect from the three-piece in recent months, 'Waylaid In Aspic' instantly explodes outwards with its compelling opening number 'Sick Hominid'. From there, the five-track collection aims to create a broad and diverse aesthetic, showing off all the elements of their adventurous direction to date. Keeping the vibes high and the energy always moving forward, their latest offering not only builds upon their vibrant foundations, but also gives us an insight into where they plan to head creatively next.

It should come as no surprise given their impressive run of form lately, but 'Waylaid In Aspic' is a strong and captivating outing that sees Viruette reach their highest zenith yet. A strong and confident return, they are definitely a name we need to keep an eye on for the months ahead.
