We Are Scientists - 'Helter Seltzer'

6/10

For a band that hasn't seen huge commercial success in over a decade, We Are Scientists have certainly done well in carving out a career for themselves. The band's debut album 'With Love And Squalor' has sold more copies than the rest of their catalogue combined, and yet here we are with album number five with a duo that refuse to give up the dream.

While We Are Scientists have maintained a moderate level of success over the years, their sound hasn't been particularly interesting in the last few. Many completely missed their fourth album 'TV En Francais' but it looks like they have managed to turn around this time. 'Helter Seltzer' sees them as a far more relaxed pair. Rather than looking to produce that stand-out single that can carry the album, the band have made a cohesive release that gels and flows like a good album should. Nothing shadows anything else and makes for a pleasant if altogether fairly forgettable listen.

It certainly isn't their most proficient album to date, but it is a well-balanced and constantly growing record. We may never see them again in their heyday but they certainly aren't going away quietly.
