We Are Scientists - 'Megaplex'

5/10

Despite never rekindling the dizzying success of their much-loved debut album 'With Love And Squalor' back in 2006, New York's We Are Scientists have done a pretty amazing job at maintaining a strong following in the years since. Now onto their sixth studio release, the outfit seems less inclined with reeling us in with ultra-polished indie-pop and looks to simply keep the boat steady as they enter their twelfth year.

From the start, 'Megaplex' looks to make some kind of impact with opener 'One In One Out', a delightful delve into the world of electro-pop that really pricks up the ears as it plays. But from there, we are treated to business as usual from the pair as their simple and basic direction takes hold and delivers one so-so single after another. The album has its moments of intrigue from time to time, but overall just doesn't seem to get itself off the ground.

It may be the sense of writer's fatigue that plagues this album, but it just feels like the duo are lost for ideas and just desperate to keep themselves going at this stage. They haven't lost the will to create a good song, but the passion and energy just seems gone now, making for a very lacklustre experience.
