William The Conqueror - 'Maverick Thinker'

7/10

Over the last few years, emerging indie-rock outfit William The Conqueror have been riding the outer peripheries of the scene. Despite a solid collection of fresh and intriguing jams arriving at a steady pace, the group haven't quite built themselves up to a point that sees them break through into a more mainstream arena. But true to form, they continue their progressive journey as they edge closer to that inevitable destination with their newest offering 'Maverick Thinker', a record that builds on their past and delivers more of that smooth and supple sound.

Recorded at LA's infamous Sound City Studios, there is something distinctly American in the direction of this British trio's latest collection. While they have often taken influence from the crooning and laid-back sound that the US has offered over the decades, this new full-length sees them double down on that almost country fried direction as they look to explore a more humbled and breezy intention. There is this strong connection with their usual demeanour and Southern American blues on 'Maverick Thinker' that gives them a far more captivating and well-rounded aesthetic than we have heard previously.

Although it doesn't have the firmest bite we were hoping for, 'Maverick Thinker' is this calm and uplifting groove of a release that showcases them in a far more matured light. More reassured in the identity they are carving for themselves, it has an intoxicating aura to it that looks to pull you in and rarely let you go.
