Wolf Parade - 'Cry Cry Cry'

8/10

Having spent their infancy releasing a flurry of new material on a regular basis, Canadian indie-rock outfit Wolf Parade suddenly went quiet after the release of their third studio album 'Expo 86' back in 2010. And then suddenly without too much fuss, the band announced their plans to make a return with this, their fourth full-length 'Cry Cry Cry', a record that shows that their time out of the spotlight may have been sorely needed.

While their was not much wrong with their last LP before this, it was clear that they were having trouble feeling inspired again. But that sense of loss in their creative spark is most definitely absent from 'Cry Cry Cry'. Producing one killer track after another, this return seems less like a cash-in and more like a recharged group of musicians ready to bring themselves out of retirement for good. Tracks like 'You're Dreaming' and 'Valley Boy' not only rekindles that spark of what they were doing originally, but also gives hints to the direction that they plan to take going forward.

While it is too early to tell exactly how they plan to move on from this, 'Cry Cry Cry' is most certainly the return that their fans would have been hoping for. It shows that their time in the wilderness may be at an end and hopefully gives them confidence once again to give us more of this fantastic music.
