What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The first instrument I fell in love with was electric guitar. My first musical endeavour as a child was classical piano, but I quickly dropped that because I did not have the patience for it and was more into rock music and guitar sounds in general.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

When I was REALLY young, I grew up on Queen, Green Day & Billy Joel and musical soundtracks. When I got to high school and college I started getting way more into all sorts of punk and jazz.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The first album I remember owning was either Queen - Greatest hits volume 1 or the Lion King on broadway CD.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

I wish I could have written Learning To Fly by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I think Tom Petty is generally a very beautiful and sincere artist, and that song gets me incredibly emotional. Also, every time I listen to it, I feel the main character energy flowing through me.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

During periods when I am not writing music, I am always journaling little ideas that I have. Feelings and anxieties on what’s happening in my life, my views politically, what’s happening around me etc. So I always have ideas to sing about.

Our band process for writing music generally goes something like this:
Ben or I will write or record an idea or skeleton
I will make it Bowling Shoes
Sam will make it make sense in a DAW and add supplemental ideas and garnishes
Sean makes the drums better and more nuanced.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Recently I’m loving Samm Henshaw, LOLO, Payday, & Remi Wolf.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

I’m gonna say Olivia Rodrigo or the 1975.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Creating the music that we want to listen to is a big one. Also the community we are able to foster with other artists and collaborators.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Not being able to do it full time.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

“Your band is only as good as your drummer”.
