After originally making their mark with their vibrant initial offerings 'It Feels' and 'Lie' back in 2021, Ukraine-based outfit The Roles make their eagerly-awaited return with their soaring new single 'I Try'.
Capturing more of that raw and passionate alt-rock energy they first emerged with, 'I Try' makes for a rousing return for the four-piece. With its broad and immersive textures, soaring atmosphere, and stunning vocals layered throughout, they are returning to the fold with one of their most captivating efforts to date.
So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has been inspiring them most lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
It sounds weird but all of us started playing guitar but then each band member found something different and involving. Our drummer Andrew picked drums since he loved drive of the sound they produce. Nastya (Our lead singer) understood that her voice is a great tool. Stas (guitarist) still plays guitar and our bass player Bohdan noticed that only bass guitar has the lowest amount of strings so he decided to choose it.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
We all had diverse tastes, from Eminem to Slipknot, which definitely affected our creativity.
What was the first album you remember owning?
We had the totally different first albums based on our preferences.
Nastya bought “Pop compilation of 2000’s.”
Stas had “Sempiternal” by Bring Me The Horizon as his first album.
Bohdan received “A thousand suns” by Linkin Park as a gift.
And Andrew downloaded “I love you” by the Neighborhood.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
It’s definitely “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, our lead singer Nastya would like to create “Back to black” by Amy Winehouse.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
We got used to jam and when it sounds great we continue to work on it until instrumental parts go solid, afterwards Nastya polishes the track with her lyrics.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
Once again, it is really hard to point out the one artist so here’s what we personally found recently:
Andrew enjoys Reignwolf.
Nastya was unable to find any new artists so she is still inspired by Thom Yorke and Radiohead.
Stas is a huge fan of Highly Suspect who definitely affected the sound of guitar.
Bohdan likes Dead Poet Society and their bass parts.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Obviously, we will be happy to open a show for any outstanding band but it would be funny if Arctic Monkeys could open our gig.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
The most valuable part is being able to share our feelings to others, support we feel from our fans and just making people feel better.
And what is the most frustrating part?
The most frustrating thing is to see how untalented and inexperienced artists become famous and admired.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
It sounds obvious but we always hear that we need to move forward and never give up, which definitely gives motivation and confidence to keep going further.
