What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
The guitar, I loved romcoms growing up so it seemed like the ideal instrument to live out those fantasies of playing an instrument one while singing to a lover. Aesthetics aside I love their sound too.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
Hip-hop, R&B and Afrobeats were definitely my foundation.
What was the first album you remember owning?
I’ve never actually owned one, asides maybe on iTunes but the first one I ever connected to deeply was Syre by Jaden Smith. Before then I used to only listen to singles off albums. Syre will always feel like a deeply underrated work of art from Jaden.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
Almost every single song from Human Condition, but I’d go with Hand of God. Being able to create an outro with songs from the same album is peak mastery.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
Not much, I just always try to speak on something that matters and feels relatable. So I end up searching through song titles to find an interesting subject matter when it doesn’t come to me immediately.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Jazz and Soul lately, it feels very far away from what I’m used to so it’s a whole new world. I’ve been listening to Caleb Arredondo, Berlioz, Cleo Sol, Yaya bey and Gibran Alcocer.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Wow definitely Burna Boy, he takes performances to a whole new level.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Seeing people connect to my music is top tier, it feels surreal. Most times I make music with minimal thought and from a place of enjoyment and fun. Having people react so deeply to stuff from my heart is definitely the best thing.
And what is the most frustrating part?
Promoting the music, it’s such a hassle. I’m getting around to it though and I’d be unstoppable when I do.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
“Make people feel, that’s the most important thing”.
