The Decemberists - 'As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again'

7/10

If there were ever a band that encapsulated the indie-folk explosion of the 00s, it would be The Decemberists. Blending traditional folk sensibilities with a more mainstream edge, the Portland-based troupe spent much of their early years turning out a wealth of riveting releases, most of which have gone down as some of the best examples of this rustic scene in the US. And while they have slowed down creatively in recent times, they are not out of ideas yet as they return with their long-awaited ninth studio album 'As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again', a record that sees them returning to those lofty ideals once again.

Much like their original tenure, 'As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again' looks to set itself as another rich and spritely offering from the group. While not quite as true to their trad origins this time around, their newest endeavour feels like a small experimental in musical innovation as they mix their distinctive style with some more adventurous pursuits, giving it a wildly diverse feel in order to keep the momentum ever moving forward.

Arriving six years after their previous effort, 'As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again' shows they are still very much on top of their ambitious nature here. Keeping a gentle mix of familiar aesthetics and the occasional break from convention gives this LP a vibrant direction that keeps The Decemberists in stellar form once again.
