Fonatines D.C. - 'Romance'

8/10

When they first emerged with their breakthrough debut LP 'Dogrel' in 2019, Fontaines D.C. instantly set themselves up as one of the frontrunners of the current post-punk revival movement. Spending much of the years since refining and developing their style, they have earned continuous praise and acclaim for their run of releases since, establishing them as one of the more formidable names on the scene. And after 2022's 'Skinty Fia' continued that vibrant ascent, they are now back once again to deliver their fourth studio album 'Romance', a record that sees them venture down a new path.

While their aesthetic over the years has always looked to adopt a brooding post-punk energy, 'Romance' sees the band adopt a more anthemic and euphoric edge, no doubt to suit the bigger stages they have been performing on recently. But while it may be a shift in tone to what many were expecting, Fontaines D.C. still manage to pack it with plenty of bold and innovative moments, containing that adventurous spirit that has already been a major part of their success up until now.

It may be a little different to what many would have anticipated, but 'Romance' proves they are still managing to unearth new and interesting directions in which to take their sound. Brimming with this grizzled power from beginning to end, the Irish five-piece are still very much on top of their game here.
