Getting To Know... Ben Dey

Following on from his recent comeback single 'Still You' earlier this year, South African singer-songwriter Ben Dey is back once again with his breezy new offering 'Cait'.

Returning with more of those Americana and African folk melodies he is known for, 'Cait' makes for a beautifully tender return to form. With his heartfelt vocals layered across a shimmering production from start to finish, he returns to us with one of his more endearing efforts to date here.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

It is not easy to say which instrument I fell in love with. My first instrument was the violin, which introduced me to this world of enchantment and melody. As a kid, I used to busk at village markets with my dog Nu Nu, playing Irish folk tunes. The violin opened me to a love of music, and led me to the guitar and voice.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Apparently, the first album I ever listened to as a baby was “Room to Roam” by the Waterboys. I love their music and Mike Scott’s songwriting. I have always been drawn to wild storytelling and feel that holds true of a place and people.

What was the first album you remember owning?

A Juluka album by Johnny Clegg.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

'Changing of the Guards' by Bob Dylan

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I play what feels like water. It's best not to try hard, but to float down a sonic river of endless motion, vibration and inspiration. I write from the heart, by feeling through the dark.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I have enjoyed the work of Sofiya Nzau, an African storyteller from Murang’a, Kenya.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

The Waterboys.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The unpredictable, intangible and reciprocity of deliverance.

And what is the most frustrating part?

A musician feels and knows he or she is a musician. It is difficult to run away from that.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

“Have a fun show!” (unknown source)
