Ibibio Sound Machine - 'Pull The Rope'

7/10

Ever since they first broke through with their incredible sophomore LP 'Uyai' in 2017, London's Ibibio Sound Machine have cemented themselves as one of the more distinctive and innovative names doing the rounds right now. Blending their unique approach to afrobeat rhythms with a fresh and energetic disco-inspired groove, they have continued their dynamic legacy with a string of highly-regarded releases in the years since. And with 2022's 'Electricity' maintaining that glorious spirit, they return with their fifth studio album 'Pull The Rope', a record that continues those inspired aesthetics once again.

Much like their tenure to date, 'Pull The Rope' looks to keep the vibes and energy as high as possible. Brimming with more of those rich and euphoric textures they have become synonymous for, their newest collection is another bright and upbeat dive into their most enigmatic ideas to date. While it may not have some of the instant anthems of their earlier material, 'Pull The Rope' still manages to pack itself with plenty of warm and enjoyable moments, perfect for kicking back after a long day's work.

Although not much of a continuation from their recent tenure, 'Pull The Rope' is more about delivering a good time than anything else. Uplifting and immersive from start to finish, Ibibio Sound Machine are remaining consistently loveable here.
