The Low Anthem - 'Eyeland'

6/10

Since the release of their self-titled debut album back in 2006, The Low Anthem have been considered one of America's most interesting outfits. Combining calming, psychedelica with traditional US folk, the band's sound is unmistakable, and now after five years since their last release, they have returned for more of the same spun-out ambience.

Opening with an incredible dreamlike soundscape, 'Eyeland' certainly aims to make an impact from the off. Although its not all whispered vocals and drawn-out synths as the record likes to occasional break open into a fast-paced breakdown or high-pitched tones, just to keep you on your toes I guess. It's pace flips on a knife-edge, which can jolt you out of the joy of it, and sometimes fails to deliver a succinct sound from song to song.

It's a strange record to get your head around. Although fans of the group will get it straight away, many new listeners may find it too far off the edge of tolerable. It's erratic, off-the-wall and most importantly, an acquired taste.
