The Naked And Famous - 'Recover'

7/10

Ever since they first made a huge impression on the world's stage with the release of their stunning debut album 'Passive Me, Aggressive You' in 2010, New Zealand's The Naked And Famous have proven themselves to be one of the most consistent and inventive electro-pop outfits working today. But over the last few years, the dynamic of the group has changed dramatically. While their third studio release 'Simple Forms' was written in the aftermath of the breakup between the band's Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers, this new collection sees them as the only two members left as 'Recover' looks to set a new beginning for The Naked And Famous.

While vocalist Alisa Xayalith and guitarist Thom Powers were always the driving force behind the group's sound, the input that the rest of the outfit provided is ever more evident on this new release. Usually filled with rich and textured anthems, 'Recover' sees the pair take their sound into a more streamlined and minimal direction, stripping back much of the fanfare and focusing instead on bright and glossy pop-rock offering throughout. From the very beginning, this new work feels like the start of something fresh and different from them, and while it doesn't have that same power behind it in places, it still manages to pack in plenty of euphoric moments.

A strong return from a group that could have easily have gone to the wall these last few years. 'Recover' is less of a band trying to make things work, and actually a strong and confident decision to take them into territory that they aren't too familiar with, showing us that there is still plenty of life in them yet.
