navel grazr - 'Elegies'

8/10

After originally starting out as a solo venture, vocalist/guitarist Anjali Nair and producer/multi-instrumentalist Dominic Dellaquila's navel grazr project has really started to find its feet in recent months. With just a small handful of demos within the first three years of their tenure, the pair's output was still considered some of the more progressive arriving on the new music scene. And after reemerging earlier this year, they now look to cement their dynamic legacy of late with the release of their immersive debut EP 'Elegies', a release continuing to push the boundaries of their sound once again.

What stands out most about this new collection is just how broad and diverse it is. With subtle nods to indie-rock, dream-pop and post-punk all wrapped up together into an enigmatic little package, 'Elegies' sees them returning to the fold with some of their most alluring releases yet. Branching out from their formative years in pursuit of something more unique to themselves, navel grazr are cultivating a brilliantly inviting sound here, something moving far beyond their peers in the same arena.

While not quite going as far as creating a whole new genre, 'Elegies' certainly looks to break the collective mould of many in their field. Creating some wildly vivid flavours across its spritely four-track runtime, they establish themselves as one of the more fascinating bands currently doing the rounds right now.
