Sexwitch - 'Sexwitch'

8/10

For a band that was only announced about a month ago, Sexwitch have certainly captured the interest of today's musically-minded. Bringing together the voice of Bat For Lashes, producer Dan Carey and members of TOY, Sexwitch's debut album is a short but powerful journey through the soundscapes of music created in the far-flung parts of the world. Each track is a cover of songs picked up in places like Morocco, Iran and Thailand, and aims to bring the sounds of these cultures together as one cohesive collection.

While the album is only six tracks in length, the atmosphere the record manages to generate is simply astounding. Creating an almost primitive base for their sound with repetitive drums and looping riffs, the album shows that despite the distance between each of the origins of the music, they still show similarities and make us realise that music in its purest form is a culture's way of expressing itself and its people.

While this is most probably going to be a one-off release, it is certainly one of the more interesting releases we have seen so far this year. Managing to convert such a variety of global sounds into a easily digestible snapshot is no easy task, but Sexwitch have managed to pull it off with great aplomb.
