What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The piano for sure. It still is my favourite instrument. My uncle was an incredible pianist so I grew up learning from someone who was incredibly passionate about piano.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

My mum has great taste in music so I grew up listening to a lot of really great singers being played at home but when I got to my teenage years I found hiphop which really impacted my life.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Kanye West - The College Dropout , got it for Christmas that year.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Ohhh great question I would have to say Kings of Tomorrow & Julie Mcknight - Finally.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

No, every time is different for me. I have to be in an energetically good place to write so for me it's making sure my life is balanced and not too busy if I know Ive got writing time blocked off. When it comes to actually crafting the song again it changes each time, sometime lyrics first sometimes melody. I usually have a rough idea of what I want to write about and how I think that sounds before I start but other times It all just comes at once and I try to roll with it.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

To be honest I am one of those people who listens to the same artists over and over again. Heavy rotation of Cleo Sol, Maverick Sabre, Kendrick, Sampha. Im also listening to a lot D&B and dance music recently. Love MPH’s new album.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Hmmm maybe Snoh Aalegra or Little Simz.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

I think I find building a song quiet rewarding, when you get a good idea or working with someone who’s on the same wavelength and you start to watch the idea come from your head into reality, I love finding my way through the initial idea into a finished piece. I also find playing live very rewarding, connecting people through music, is for me, a very powerful act.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Probably the industry demands. Writing great music, releasing constantly, social media marketing constantly and working a job on top of it all gets tough over a long period of time.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

A lot of advice and learnings over the years. I think when I first started one of my mentors told me to learn the business side of the industry but let it consume you - that helped me to be more educated going into meetings and making decisions for my work when others were involved in the process and I guess just staying the path, keep going and keep pouring into yourself and your work.
