Chromeo - 'Head Over Heels'

7/10

Since their inception, Canadian duo Chromeo have always looked to bring the good times on their records. With a clear influence from the classic disco and funk days, the pair have managed to reinvent the genres into a contemporary guise to make them one of the more unique parts of the scene. But on their fifth full-length 'Head Over Heels', we see them channel their inspirations even further, making this one of their more retro-felt records to date.

From the start of opening track 'Must've Been', it becomes obvious that they have stripped back a lot of their usual electronic sound for something more organic, making the soul influences of the past even more apparent on this release. But in attempt to try and push themselves forward, they have recruited a lot more rappers this time than most. Adopting appearances from the likes of French Montana and Stefflon Don for the track 'Don't Sleep' aims to add a hint of diversity to this record, and ultimately sees them venture into new and interesting territory from time to time.

While each track seems to have something to enjoy about it, it doesn't quite gel as well as their previous albums. Whether it is the strong Prince vibe on 'Bad Decisions' or the pure electro-pop joy of 'Juice', they manage to keep your feet tapping but you'll find yourself skipping through parts to find the highlights. Still a fantastic listen either way and one that at least sees them break away from their conventions.
