Diagrams - 'Chromatics'

7/10

As one of the founding members of irreverent folk outfit Tunng, frontman Sam Genders is no stranger to producing unusual and transcendent music. But since leaving his chosen outfits to start a solo project, Genders has really found his footing and is now creating some of the best left-of-centre music since Super Furry Animals. His sophomore album 'Chromatics' looks to expand his already impressive repertoire as it blends folk inspirations with an ever-present electronically-lead production.

While at first the album may seem to be rooted in its ability to create huge and sometimes overbearing folk anthems, the record quickly brings itself down to a more humble tone, which seems to suit Genders writing style a little more. While the big tracks are great to get nodding to, it's the more sombre additions that really bring out his talents as you begin to hear all the tiny eccentricities added to the songs production, giving the tracks a more well-rounded delivery.

It is certainly a well-conceived new release with all the makings of a true songwriter who has thought about every nuance throughout. A strong and uplifting collection of songs that aim to keep you feeling a little warmer this winter.
