Dirty Projectors - 'Dirty Projectors'

7/10

Despite largely disbanding since the release of their 2012 album 'Swing Lo Magellan', Dirty Projectors are back with a new full-length that has seen the line-up stripped back to just one single member. Producer and occasional frontman of the group David Longstreth has now become the only proprietor to the Dirty Projectors name, and as a result, has completely reinvented the sound of the group with this self-titled release.

We could tell we were in for a ride after hearing a number of the album's initial singles. The sheering, warped sound of each and every track on this release has turned the band's signature style into an almost unrecognisable animal, featuring shrieked electronics and distorted beats throughout. The only thing that remains unchanged are David's seminal vocals, that do an incredible job at riding this strange and unusual landscape.

I think it is fair to say that this new release is not for everyone, especially those who are expecting to here the old Dirty Projectors sound once again. Longstreth has certainly managed to add numerous layers of individuality to this record that will surely peak the interests of some rather than most.
