While there is no doubt that most of the world will know the name Joe Keery for his role as Steve Harrington on Stranger Things, the accomplished actor has also been carving himself a niche within the psych-pop world ever since he first picked up his most notable mantle. Originally the guitarist and drummer for Chicago-based outfit Post Animal, Keery launched his Djo project to enormous acclaim in 2019 with his debut solo LP 'Twenty Twenty'. But now it feels like he is looking for something bigger than just a side project as he returns with his sophomore album 'Decide', a record that brims with fresh and exciting innovation.
Although his solo work has been largely overlooked despite his international acting recognition, 'Decide' is his most high-profile release to date as many wake up to the fact that he is not just another actor wanting to give music a go. Throughout his latest collection, in which he plays almost every instrument himself, he looks to explore a rich and kaleidoscopic atmosphere that rebrands an 80s nostalgic vibe for the modern ear. With nods to the classic soul and funk sound, all wrapped up in a Prince-esque level of psychedelic energy, he is proving himself as a brilliantly adventurous name on the scene right now.
While it doesn't have much in the way of standout singles, the general tone and vibe of 'Decide' makes for a wonderfully refreshing listen. Focused and driven within its aesthetic, he has cultivated a sound that feels so magnificently effortless, you'll be hard pressed to find something you don't love about it.
