Frank Turner - 'Positive Songs For Negative People'

7/10

Dubbed as the Billy Bragg for the credit crunch generation, Frank Turner's political leanings have always been at the core of his songwriting and fanbase. Galvanising his listeners with shout-along anthems on subjects ranging from personal relationships to social outrage, Turner has always been an artist people gravitate to, as he looks to continue his message with his sixth studio album to date.

As its title suggests, 'Positive Songs For Negative People' is intended to be a more uplifting record than his previous releases, and that would be a correct assumption. Maybe he is getting less enraged in his later years, but the songs on offer this time round are a lot lighter, lyrically speaking. Taking more of a protagonist's point of view, Turner's latest album is based more on relatable anecdotes than protest mantras, giving it a more restrained yet focused sound.

While it sounds a long way from his origins, 'Positive Songs For Negative People' is strong development in the sound of Frank Turner. He is less scrappy and more defined as an artist and simply looks to be on a journey of his own self-discovery.
