Getting To Know... Abby Nissenbaum

Following on from the release of her highly-praised EP 'Unreliable Narrator' earlier this year, Nashville-based artist Abby Nissenbaum is back at it once again with her shimmering new single 'Limerence'.

Harnessing more of that warm and invigorating pop-rock aesthetic she has been cultivating over the years, 'Limerence' makes for a rousing return for the artist at the helm. With its bright and euphoric production perfectly elevating her spellbinding vocals throughout, she is returning to the fold with one of her most impactful cuts to date here.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has been inspiring her lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Probably piano. My parents had an 80s-era Yamaha electric piano with a bunch of funny preset songs apropos of that time period (like Men Without Hats’ “The Safety Dance”). I would play around on top of the preset songs all the time and make up my own stuff, and then I started taking piano lessons in elementary school. My lessons didn’t last long and I didn’t get very far in terms of piano skills, but that was my first exposure to an instrument.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I grew up on classic rock, which my parents always had playing at home and in the car. Some favourites were Fleetwood Mac (of course), Steely Dan, and Janis Joplin.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Britney Spears, “... Baby One More Time”. A classic.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

“The Joke” by Brandi Carlisle.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I usually start out with a focal line or phrase and will fill in verses and sometimes bridges around it. I also tend to start out with just general ideas of what I want to say, then I’ll go back and fix lines to ensure that they sound fairly eloquent and the number of syllables work and everything.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Frightened Rabbit is forever my favourite band. Scott Hutchison depicted misery in a really poetic way, to the point where gut-wrenchingly sad lyrics could almost be construed as reassuring or hopeful. Right now I’m also loving Daughter’s new album, “Stereo Mind Game,” and on the pop side, I’m enjoying Chappell Roan’s “The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess.”

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Becca Mancari. I’ve always really resonated with their music and think they put on great shows regardless of the space (also, they have consistently amazing fashion).

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Getting to connect with people I may not have otherwise met, and realising that others have gone through many of the same experiences I have.

And what is the most frustrating part?

I’m a completely independent artist and have a day job in health tech, so my time and funding for music endeavours is limited to my non-work hours and whatever I have left in my budget.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Trust, but verify. Even if you’re collaborating with friends as an independent musician, always have a signed contract in place before you begin working on anything. Many times we just want to focus on the creative aspects as artists and disregard business components, but an enforceable contract now could save you huge headaches and financial repercussions down the road.
