Getting To Know... Col Gerrard

After originally being signed to Warner-Chappell when he was just 19-years-old before taking an extended break from the music industry, London-based singer-songwriter Col Gerrard has now returned to unveil his shimmering new single 'Nowhere'.

Channelling more of that warm and inviting indie-rock aesthetic he was first applauded for, 'Nowhere' makes for a wonderfully rich and enticing listen. With his sweet and passionate voice layered across a dreamy production from start to finish, this new delight is another shining example of his glittering work to date.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Piano

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Just about everything. Pop, R&B, Soul, Hip Hop, Garage, R&R, Classics.

What was the first album you remember owning?

‘Lodger’ by David Bowie

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

‘Mercy Mercy Me’ by Marvin Gaye

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I go for a long walk…2 espressos…then ready to roll.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

‘Black Coffee’-‘Prince’-‘David Bowie’-Dionne Warwick’

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

‘The Who’

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Having a creative outlet that allows me to breathe.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Finishing the song…and knowing it’s not quite right…for you.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Stick to your ‘sound’ and remember… criticism is only an opinion.
