Getting To Know... HOO HAs

Having been previously supported by the likes of John Kennedy on Radio X, BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music, as well as being described as "Captain Beefheart meets Blur" by legendary Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes, London-based outfit HOO HAs now return with their latest belter 'Tell Me How It Is'.

With its smooth and jangled sound throughout, 'Tell Me How It Is' marks the first piece of new material from the group so far this year. Filled with catchy guitar hooks, a breezy rhythm, and singalong vocals, their latest jam is sure to keep your toes tapping from start to finish.

So with their new single now doing the rounds, we sat down with them to find out more about their influences and what first inspired them to get into music.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

My mum's dildo, because I don't play any other ones. Just write the words and sing them...

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

Everything is an inspiration. The good, the bad and especially the ugly.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

The bass interludes on Seinfeld and Pere Ubu.

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

“The Wanderer” by Dion and the Belmonts.

When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

Grime if I'm alone, if I have company something jazzy like Mose Allison or Ramsey Lewis. Or something sixties like The Zombies or Harry Nilsson.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

Almost all of them.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

Giving Grace Jones a high five.

Outside of music, what is your biggest passion?

Masks, I’m quite lucky at the moment.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

A Satanist or evangelical Christian one.

And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to start a career in music?

Dragons Den.
