What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
Piano! I grew up dreaming of going to Julliard in NYC as a young kid because all I played was classical piano.
What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?
Self-expression and freedom in my expression - creating music that’s relevant to me and my heart and also something people can relate to. I write about my experiences whether it’s relationships, faith, my music journey, etc.
What kind of music did you love as a teenager?
Oh man, a mixture of Metro Station in my younger teen years (my best friend and I were lil wanna-be punks), Bon Iver and gospel music. I used to say I loved and listened to a variety of music except for country, but now I’m obsessed with country music so I feel like I’ve covered most musical ground.
Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?
I started singing and getting into music when I was ….probably in the womb. But for real, I sang in church as a kid so much and the first time I sang in front of a huge crowd was when I was six years old and it was for 2,000 people. It’s always been a part of me. So what made me love singing was probably the fact that I was around gospel music and incredible gospel musicians all of the time.
When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?
Gregory Alan Isakov - ‘Weatherman’ album. Hands down the easiest answer ever.
How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?
A good 90% of them.
What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?
Honestly aside from being in the studio, some of my most memorable moments are my music video shoot days. I plan them with so much effort – I have such good memories of going vintage shopping to find the wardrobe, etc - but the shoot days always end up being so much fun. Seeing a visual get put over your own music is an unforgettable experience.
Outside of music, what is your biggest passion?
I love traveling to NYC (it’s one of my favourite places on earth), baking, vintage shopping, and as of right now I’m pretty obsessed with the ocean because I recently moved right next to it!
If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?
Well - my mom, dad and brother (Austin North) moved to LA and originally I was in the acting industry with him. He’s had a successful career so far but I knew pretty much within the first 10 months of being here that I wanted to give my energy to music instead. If I wasn’t pursuing music though, I’d definitely be interested in picking acting back up.
And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to stay productive through the coronavirus lockdown?
Don’t stress if you don’t write anything - that pressure is awful especially when you’re cooped up. But also challenge yourself to write in new environments – go outside. Feel the sun on your face. Be childlike again. Take walks. Find inspiration in the simplicity.
