What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
Drums & Guitar were the instruments I bonded with early. Many family members & community around me played these sounds including piano within different spaces.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
Being the youngest, I consumed many genres from my siblings, peers & elders. From the sounds of Motown, Disco, Afro beats, R&B & Jazz, to the higher tempos of Hip Hop & Rock music, I was a creative sponge growing up in the 90’s & 2k. Music for me always felt like a time capsule.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Although I claimed access to all classic vinyls, tapes & CD’s within my reach as a child, my first album purchased was Beware Of The Dog by Bow Wow.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
I Ain’t Mad at Cha by 2pac.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
The sounds & colors flow differently when creating with/for others or myself. What could be done in no time & on the spot for one track or project, could take months for another. I always find myself taking in multiple experiences when creating records for my personal catalogues.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
I’m an old soul so I strongly connect to many artists of the past that speak relevance to modern creativity & life. I would say someone within the last 10 years is Kendrick Lamar.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
The one & only Kanye West.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Being the voice of the people & times. As I mentioned about time capsules. We have the gift of bringing the listeners & viewers into many emotions of history. The beauty is being able to transcend that time and space forever.
And what is the most frustrating part?
Feeling misunderstood, which is a human emotion. Because we represent so much more than ourselves. The weight of carrying everyone’s emotions can be discouraging for many.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
DMX told me “no matter how far this takes you, remember that kid that loves hip hop in you. Hold on to all the core values that make you a good person.”
