What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
Kai - I think the first instrument I fell in love with was the sax, it always stuck out in mixes and crossed a lot of genres I listened to when I was younger.
Ally - The first musical instrument I fell in love with was the drum kit. Ever since I got offered to play drums it’s always been a big part of what I listen to in music. Over time this progressed into me being able to play the kit fairly well just from tapping on my lap.
Jack - I fell in love with the guitar when I was young. My dad and my brother played, so it wasn’t easy to hide from it.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
Kai - I was a very sporadic kid with music, I liked to dip my toes into everything and use it to reflect my state of mind, but my most memorable was electronic music (more specifically house/French house) as it had a very calming steady beat that fit in a lot of scenarios.
Ally - I never really got into music until my late teens. But of the music I did listen to it was a combination of rock music and music which was being played in movies, in the house, and in the car. This gave me a sense of some styles I liked which progressed into properly listening to lots of music.
Jack - Queen has been my favourite band for as long as I can remember. I also have wonderful memories of listening to Status Quo and T.Rex with my grandmothers.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Kai - The first album I owned was the unforgettable Gorillaz - Demon days, the amount of analysis my baby brain undertook during those listening sessions changed my outlook on my relationship with music forever.
Ally - I have never owned an album of my own! But my parents have hundreds of albums that I have access to and have listened to for years. One of the earliest ones I listened to was 'Only By the Night' by Kings of Leon, from which my favourite song was closer. It wasn’t the drums I was tuned into either it was the guitar riff which I loved a lot about that particular song.
Jack - The first album I remember owning was “Freedom” by Neil Young. I still love and appreciate that album, and I recently bought it on vinyl.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
Kai - “What's Going On” by Marvin Gaye with the beautiful James Jamerson.
Ally - I wish I had written “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin. It’s one of my and the boys (Peached) favourite songs to cover and has been for a couple of years now.
Jack - A song I wish I had written is “Smile” by David Gilmour. It’s such a beautiful song, Lyrically and melodically.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
Kai - I think putting myself in uncomfortable situations can spark a bit of creativity because it feels like it shakes up the cocktail of my brain.
Ally - Habits I have when trying to write new music is to listen to lots of different styles and types of music which I found interesting at that time. This gives me new and different ideas similar to those songs that I can then piece together to create some unique song ideas that have been reworked from other music to make my own. For making drum beats this can be very useful as you can keep a drum beat similar to another song and then the boys will start jamming to the beat and come up with a completely different song that sounds amazing with the same beat. Then I can change the drum beats so it isn’t identical and is a piece of my own work.
Jack - Most of the songs I have written come to me and in that moment I have to stop what I’m doing and pick up the guitar.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
Kai - I’ve currently been experimenting with random new songs but did binge a lot of Dead Poet Society recently cause I was seeing them live and the odd dive into Jamiroquai.
Ally - Currently the music I’ve found myself diving into is black sabbath. Particularly their first album from 1970!
Jack - I’ve found myself listening to a lot of Pink Floyd, Wolfmother, and Jack White at the moment.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Kai - I would die to open a gig for the Foo Fighters just because I think they'd be a great laugh backstage, and the crowd would be insane!
Ally - If I could open a show for anyone currently in the world I’d love to open for either queens of the Stone Age or foo fighters.
Jack - I would love to open for Rage Against the Machine. It was a hard one, but I think that’d be a fun lineup.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Kai - Having a cigarette after a gig never fails to give me a whack of dopamine but in reality, it's just the experience of playing music live and entertaining.
Ally - The most rewarding part about being a musician is having people connect to your music rather than having people feel forced to have to listen to it. It’s important that people listen to my music and what we (peached) make as a band and connect with it the way we do.
Jack - The most rewarding thing about being a musician is sharing the journey with your best pals. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished recently, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
And what is the most frustrating part?
Kai - For sure would be the balancing of the music life and regular work life, they can't always coexist perfectly and it does take its toll.
Ally - The most frustrating part about being a musician Is not being able to play all the time or whenever I want due to other commitments like work and university.
Jack - The most frustrating part is definitely regular old life getting in the way of pursuing your dream.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Kai - It’s always such a cliche to say but the best advice I can think of is "repetition", it seems dumb but felt it’s applied itself in a lot of ways whether it's writing music, practicing, or pursuing more gigs in the scene.
Ally - The best piece of advice I have received as a musician is that simplicity is key. Don’t overcomplicate a song and add anything fancy that isn’t important. Just play to what the song needs.
Jack - Do what makes you happy. Peached are probably my favourite band and we write the music because it’s what we listen to. Watching it all come alive is what makes me happy.
