What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
A black Fender Stratocaster (I should never have sold it).
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
Micheal Jackson. Then I remember hearing Mrs Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel and that changed things.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Spice Girls ‘Spice’. Followed quickly by Eels Beautiful Freak. It was the 90’s.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
Bridges and Balloons, Joanna Newsom.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
Herbal tea. But I don’t ever truly sit down and try to write music. I usually just play absentmindedly and record everything on my phone when something sounds good. Enough seems to bubble up that then needs to be caretakered into something listenable. With The White Russian I bring the songs pretty bare-bones to the room and let the band fill in the magic.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
Marina Allen, Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine, Tew, Big Thief, Dominic Fike, The Lemon Twigs.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Probably Bill Callahan.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Working with my friends on the songs and recordings. Singing in front of people is equal parts horrifying and rewarding.
And what is the most frustrating part?
Having to push the music on people.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Don’t use a plectrum all the time / sing with the front of your face.
