Gwenno - 'Y Dydd Olaf'

7/10

While albums sung entirely in Welsh are seen as a bit of a niche market these days, that hasn't stopped from former Pipettes frontman Gwenno Saunders from releasing her latest work in her native tongue. Working under the guise Gwenno, her new album 'Y Dydd Olaf' is a concept release aimed at making comparisons with today's social uncertainty and that of a dystopian future where robots rule the earth, inspired by the 70s sci-fi novel of the same name.

While its content and message may be lost to those without a solid grasp of the Welsh language, it is the music behind the words that proves the most impressive. Despite what it claims to be about, the general atmosphere of this new record is one of joy and warmth. Obviously trying to show an extensive juxtaposition between its concerning lyrical content yet maintaining a fluffy and uplifting exterior throughout.

Most people in the UK may not understand what is supposed to be happening but its general rhythm is what makes this record so engaging. Even if it were an instrumental album, it would still have enough to keep you interested and it is that ingenuity that would make this full-length a delight in any language.
