Hookworms - 'Microshift'

8/10

During their infancy, five-piece experimental outfit Hookworms were quite the prolific name. With two studio albums pushed out in quick succession in 2013 and 2014 respectively, the band seemed to be riding a wave of buzz and anticipation. But since the release of their second album 'The Hum', they pretty much disappeared without a trace. But after four years in the wilderness, they are back with their largely electronic new full-length 'Microshift', a record that seems to want to project a whole new side to their catalogue.

While an electronic edge has always remained part of their style, this new release sees them adopt synths into the fold almost completely. Making their intentions clear with opener and lead single 'Negative Space', a bustling juggernaut of robotic glitchiness, the album never really likes to let go of its new found love of the techno sound. As it moves on, 'Microshift' sees them become more playful within their disposition, creating a mix of anthemic power tracks and more atmospheric ideas that deliver a warming juxtaposition of rapid punches and soft touches.

It may be hard to remember the band in a different light as this new full-length gives them a whole new identity and direction. They have returned with so much more confidence in their songwriting and this record is just a reminder of exactly how brilliant they have always been.
