Jónsi - 'Frakkur 2000-2004'

7/10

Always one to keep things inventive, Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi has been a consistent player in the world of experimental electronica as long as his formative outfit has been around. But despite his ever prolific nature, the multi-instrumentalist found himself at a loss more than ten years ago after the hard-drive containing three of his full-length works was corrupted, leaving next to no chance of them being recovered. Thankfully after a lot of work and commitment, the trio of albums have now been recovered and available for us to listen to, almost fifteen years after much of it was made.

From the start, 'Frakkur 2000-2004' showcases Jónsi's talent for juggling emotion through vast experimentation and atmospheric direction. Each instrumental piece sits somewhere between the ethereal and the captivating as striking electronics intertwine themselves with a subtle tones and keys, creating a release that somehow washes over you yet demands your attention as it plays. Moving from one album to the next, we get to hear how the frontman's intentions and inspirations evolved through the years, giving an almost retrospective look to his influences and seeing him progress and grow as an artist.

They may all be well over a decade old since they were recorded, but 'Frakkur 2000-2004' sees Jónsi just as fresh and inventive as ever. His experimental nature sounds unhindered throughout this new release, as we get to experience a truly unique musician at play.
