Jake Bugg - 'On My One'

4/10

Since his explosive introduction back in 2012, Jake Bugg has been riding a crest of buzz and critical acclaim ever since. But with the release of his third album, Bugg has opted to self-produce his latest release, something that proves to be fatal mistake on this new record.

After having production heavyweight Rick Rubin produce his previous full-length 'Shangri La', the difference in quality is palpable on this new record. While the experimentation and diversity of sound on this new album is admirable, without that second voice in the room to focus him and give him direction, the result is this mismatched collection of awkward pace and influence that creates a rather unpleasant listening experience.

Some of the tracks are ok, but it is mostly a mixture of derivative songwriting and/or over-the-top production (note: 'Gimme The Love') that becomes the more memorable aspects of this release. Hopefully he will realise his mistakes on this record and not try to go completely solo for his next album.
