KAYTRANADA - 'Intimidated'

7/10

Ever since he introduced himself some years ago, KAYTRANADA has been one of the most exciting and inventive producers working today. With a warm and driven approach to beats and rhythm, he has developed an instantly recognisable style that has earned him countless accolades and praise for a string of vibrant releases. And now as he continues to venture across the US on his extensive headline tour, he returns to keep our appetites whet with the breezy three-track EP 'Intimidated', a release brimming with smooth and sensual tones.

Featuring guest performances from H.E.R., Thundercat, and Mach-Hommy across the three additions, 'Intimidated' acts as a solid warm up for what we only hope is more music on the way. Arriving two years after his multi-Grammy award winning sophomore LP 'BUBBA' in 2019, the new collection aims to take his bold and inviting sound through broader and more atmospheric avenues. While all three have the same shimmering KAYTRANADA handprint layered throughout, the invitation of three completely different and versatile guest acts gives this collection a multifaceted and adventurous aesthetic, an appeal that really stands out from start to finish.

It may clock in at less than ten minutes in length, but 'Intimidated' still manages to pack in plenty of captivating moments throughout. While each offering sometimes feel like they are incomplete in terms of experimentation and progression, the EP still makes for a rousing listen and an enjoyable burst of smooth flavour.
